In 1893, Lake Mills Was Closed Due to Diphtheria

Comment and refutation of Addie Hoyt Fargo blog dated 2/18/2012

After 50 hours of reading the Lake Mills Leader I expected better.  Guess it would have been less time if Spriggs and Rosemary had not been spending as much time working on their conspiracy theory and more time working on facts and logical thought processes.  I would guess the time would be cut in half.....but they probably had to move their lips while reading.  Spriggs likely did all the work.  He's the guy that mocked up the Addie pictures in PhotoShop for the presentation to the LM chapter of the State Historical Society.  Now that was a scam, spousal abuse and all......

What has 50 hours of time provided:
  • Houses were built on Reed Street.
  • The cemetery sexton stated the state laws and guidelines would be followed
  • There was a diphtheria epidemic in 1893
  • F. B. Fargo's kid come down with smallpox
Somehow I think this isn't the end since this isn't anywhere close to meeting the drama consumption needs of the Desperate Housewives of Norfolk.

I'll spend a little time on each of the points.

There were houses built on Reed Street, go figure.  Reed Street ran closely to the Creamery Package.  That might not be coincidence unless it doesn't fit your conspiracy theory premise.

Rosemary wrote a little fictitious Rober Frost type moment for Robert Fargo.  Cute but nothing factual in this account other than the commitment to adhere to stated laws and guidelines.  Not that everyone chose to follow those laws and guidelines.  Since Addie's death of super ninja diphtheria (or whatever) caused alarm the paper work didn't get done.    The paper work didn't get done for other deaths about the same time.

Yep, there was a diphtheria epidemic in 1893.   The community reacted to that event based on knowledge and experience at the time with the advice of the local doctor.  Just like they did when Addie died.

F. B. Fargo's kid got smallpox and since the community was sensitized by the recent death he was proactive with handling that situation.  Rosemary actually got close to the truth on this one.   Better to publish a comprehensive report of the event than have the natives charge the house with torches, pitchforks and scyths.

As for Rosemary's statement that quarantine and fumigation did not occur......nothing is documented that suggests this is true.  Quite the contrary, the two daughters had a "forced" absence from high school graduation exercises.   Logically that would be due to quarantine.

I can hardly wait for the next chapter of the conspiracy theory.  It's not that entertaing but fictional approach is interesting.

  1. 50 hours reading the Lake Mills Leader?? Fifty?? Good lord! Someone actually admitted they did that?? No hidden meaning here - the meanings are very obvious. A person is not able to prove a point so they spend 50(!) hours combing through the LML. Incredible.

    1. Maybe this is why an author appearance for her Sears book was cancelled this Spring - much more "productive" things to do. - still searching for clues for a mystery which can't even be published as fiction now, as it's too obvious who all the characters are, even if the names and places were changed.

  2. Not a very productive fifty hours at that. I guess tomorrow we'll get another one of the made for TV chapters like “What The Hell Happened Out Here Last Night?”

    1. Nothing more than 1800-1900's version of sound bites; fodder of fools and filler when nothing new can be gleaned when there are no facts.

  3. I forgot two items in the list of findings that I wrote about in a previous blog:
    Enoch bought farmland and livestock.
Enoch took his wife to Cuba on an extended vacation
I think Rosemary was trying to make something out of the expense for these events, whatever that means....

    1. I think she was about to claim that he had financial trouble and was headed down the "He killed her for insurance money" road but figured that would be even more ridiculous than the the other laughable evidence she has posted.

    2. I can't imagine she thought it was too ridiculous. Nothing seems too ridiculous.

  4. Does anyone ever wonder why there is never a naysayers comment posted on the Sears Homes Murder blog?

    1. Not for lack of trying. I have posted numerous times and have been "moderated" every time. If she is after the truth, why not open her facebook page to everyone. She has been challenged to debate on numerous occasions but lacks the courage of her confictions and the character to deal with the truth. Follow the money!

  5. Not surprising. Check out Gardenweb. Plenty of naysayers mixed in with the adoration, including a great definition of responsible research. And do it quickly, before that link is removed.

    1. What is the exact URL you are looking at? I was out there and didn't find anything. Thanks.

    2. I guess that was the reason for the remark..."And do it quickly, befroe the link is removed."

    3. I can't find it either. I'll give the benefit of the doubt here and say that it's there but I can't find it. There are different links under the Garden Web/Addie Fargo discussion. So if there is a Fan of Rosemary reading this blog who knows IF it's still there, would you post the URL. Nice to be transparent. While I couldn't find it, here is a link instead - it shows the origin of the arsenic-as-death statement. It's about halfway down the page. Al

    5. Thanks, a lot of same old stuff from July. Seems like an odd place to post this kind of dreck. Maybe Rosemary is still having dreams......probably taking chantix.

    6. Not any more odd than posting on a "diseases of the nose" website - or equally odd.

I wouldn't be surprised to check Gov Walker's State Budget and find "Enoch shot Addie!! sandwiched in between the state power plants and Medicare.

    7. After all the places that Addie (read Sear's Homes) has been pinned to, I can't believe that anyone would believe that this is anything other than an internet blitz with the intention of bringing that silly Sear's website to light. Talk about gullible. Chuck.

  6. After 50 exhaustive hours of reading the Leader she writes that Frank Fargo's son had smallpox when her "evidence, the Leader, states that he had scarlet fever. This is pretty typical of how she reports. I estimate that I have spent over 2100 hours reading the Lake Mills Leader and have yet to be exhausted by it.
When Rosie gave her talk to Lake Mills she gives a timeline of events about Addie Fargo's death and punctuates her statements by saying "and all this happened pre-telephone". Fact: the telephone came to Lake Mills in 1880, the first being in William Harvey's general store on Lake Street. By 1898 phone service was extended north to Faville Grove (2 miles north of town) and west on the Madison Road to the Badger State Creamery.

  7. Oh, scarlet fever, small pox, it's all the same isn't it in this novel? Why is she bothering with the LML - surely Enoch, in his grand scheme, would have thought to pay off the editor and reporters. That left poor Oatway to write the club news and weather in between writing obits. Oh, I forgot. Oatway was paid off too according to the consipracy theorists. al

    1. My absolute favorite is how Rosie accuses Dr. Oatway of being a liar, a conspirator in murder and then references him to support her story about Addie's death not being diphtheria. Remember she states that Dr. Oatway wrote the obituary.
Has anyone ever heard of a doctor writing his patient's obit? Or a doctor assigning a burial permit number? This number would have come from the Sexton (Robert Fargo was never the sexton of Rock Lake Cemetery, he was secretary of the cemetary association, and had nothing to do with the assignment of permit numbers). Hanson and Hildebrandt would have handled everything after Dr. Oatway pronounced Addie dead including getting the burial permit. I have seen the burial permit book, or what is left of it. You see good readers these pages have been torn from the covers of the book and it is impossible to tell how many records are missing. Many records were thrown out when the city moved from Lake Street to their present location. Also the Moravians had their own section of the cemetery and may well have kept their records.

    2. Anybody imagining an editor on deadline trying to decipher a doctor's handwriting?? Maybe she didn't die at 2 AM. with the service at 10 AM. Maybe the good doctor had written "Take one dose at 2 AM and another at 10 AM." A.
